Nurturing Creativity Through Repeat Engagements
Over the past three years, Topology has been working closely with the students of Cooktown State School to nurture creativity and provide meaningful high-quality arts experiences.
Like many schools in the region, Cooktown SHS has faced ongoing challenges due to limited funding and resources dedicated to arts education. Despite these barriers, the students and staff have a strong desire to engage with music and creative learning.
Building on several prior engagements with the school, Topology invited the students of Cooktown State School to participate in Topology’s first ever Normanby Creative Bootcamp in 2024. The program was held at Normanby Station, located 150km outside of Cooktown and managed by the Harrigan Brothers – traditional owners of the land and members of the iconic Cape York band Black Image. This unique setting provided the students with an immersive cultural and creative experience, blending music-making with a deeper connection to Country and community.
Following the On-Country Creative Bootcamp, the students were invited to record their performances, culminating in a full album of original music for the students to take home and share – a lasting memento of their creative achievement.
Music teacher Sam Jeffries reflects on the impact of the program:
“It’s a massive change for them. I have never seen these kids so focused, and it’s all they want to talk about – music. They are just so dedicated, and it’s unreal to see the difference.”
The students returned to Normanby Station in 2025 for a second immersive creative experience, continuing to develop their musical skills and create music on Country. Building on the momentum of these programs and the strong relationships formed, Topology also returned to Cooktown State School later in 2025 to celebrate its 150th anniversary – performing alongside students, Topology musicians and Black Image in a special community-wide event.
This ongoing engagement is a powerful example of the transformative impact of creativity and the way repeated, hands-on arts experiences can inspire, empower and elevate young people in regional communities.
